What are you willing to sacrifice to fear? What will you give up for a sense of security?
Those of us who have grown up in the United States since the times of WWII have experienced a time of unprecedented peace. While there has been violence on our shores and wars abroad, never in human history have a people been so sheltered from the reality of death and mortality mankind faces everyday.
We have become arrogant in our medicine. Our superior military might has kept conquering nations at bay. In a short time we have become ignorant to our own mortality.
The face of death has never left. It has been ever present, but at arm’s length. It’s face has been shielded for a few generations, and is now revealing itself again, even if for a moment.
Illness is not new. Death is not new. Sickness that has no cure has always been the rule, not the exception.
Now faced with a monster erroneously thought defeated...an enemy foolishly forgotten, we run in fear and seek the shelter of ignorance. Leaders express the willingness to sacrifice everything in want of salvation.
Run, hide, cower because it’s something we cannot fix with the snap of a finger.
What’s faced is nothing new in the story of man. What’s faced is simply a reminder of our own shortcomings...our humanity...our mortality.
It is an unbelievable blessing that death is foreign, but it has also become our curse. We’ve never beaten death, though we’ve tricked ourselves to believing we are gods. You face death everyday, yet only now do you see it.
Is everything we’ve built a worthy sacrifice for fear? Is the loss of our freedoms what’s needed to cure this illness? When, out of fear, have you given up more than what was taken?
